Author Guidelines

Deceased Patient permission form

Authors who submit their articles to the scientific and practical edition "Russian Osteopathic Journal", should be guided by the requirements developed by the journal on the basis of the current recommendations of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Russian Federation and of the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals developed by the International committee of editors of medical journals.

General guidelines

The manuscript should be typed with a font size of 14 pt double-spaced with margins of 2.5 cm. The paper size should be A4 (210x295 mm). Pages should be numbered consecutively. Automatic word break should not be used.

Manuscripts should be sent to the e-mail address roj@osteopathie.ru

The title page must contain:

1) concise and informative article title in Russian and in English;

2) authors’ names and initials in Russian and in English with the use of transliteration;

3) authors’ academic degrees, titles, positions and places of work with postal address;

4) corresponding author’s last name, first name, e-mail, and mobile phone;

5) header (short title) of 5-6 words to be posted on the journal page;

6) information on sources of financing;

7) conflict of interest statement.

If there are several authors, each name and corresponding institution must be accompanied by a number code. If all the authors work in the same institution it is not necessary to indicate the place of work for each author separately.

This block of information should be presented in both Russian and English languages. The authors’ last names should be transliterated in the same way as in previous publications or according to the BSI (British Standards Institution) system. See the website http://en.translit.net/?account=bsi.

It is necessary to indicate an officially adopted English name of the organizations.

The abstract should be typed on a separate page in Russian and in English. It should have a structure, i. e. repeat the headings of the article sections: a) the purpose of the research; b) materials and methods; c) results; d) conclusion. It should contain from 250 to 500 words. The reader should understand the keynote of the research and the necessity to refer to the full text of the article in order to obtain detailed information.

Non-systematic reviews, clinical cases, series of observations, author's opinions require unstructured abstracts of no more than 250 words. However, even in this case, authors should point out the problem and proceed to the means of its solution.

Include 3 to 10 keywords in Russian and in English, which accurately identify the paper’s subject, purpose, method and focus and highlight new and important aspects of research. Place them on the same page as the abstract. These should be indexing terms that may be published with the abstract with the aim of increasing the likely accessibility of your paper to potential readers searching the literature.

Text. Original articles should not exceed 15 pages. Reviews should not exceed 18 pages. Original research articles containing more pages are accepted on an individual basis, as decided by the editorial board. The number of figures and tables should correspond to the volume of the information provided, in accordance with the principle "necessary and sufficient". The data presented in the tables should not repeat the information from the figures or the text and vice versa. Remember that in case of redundancy of illustrative material the article can be returned to the authors for revision and shortening.

The article should be carefully edited and verified by the authors. The presentation of the material should be clear. The introduction should not be too long and should not contain repetitions. The international system of SI units should be used. If the research was performed on devices giving indicators in different units, these units should be transferred to the SI system. It is necessary to indicate the conversion factor or the computer program used for the conversion in the section "Materials and Methods".

Word contractions are not allowed, except generally accepted. Abbreviations can be included in the text only after their first mentioning with a full transcript: for example, ischemic heart disease (IHD). Only capital letters can be used in the abbreviations.

Original research articles should contain the following sections: 1. "Introduction"; 2. "Purpose of the research"; 3. "Materials and methods"; 4. "Results and discussion"; 5. "Conclusion"; 6. "References."

Introduction. Provide a context or background for the study (that is, the nature of the problem and its significance). Include references to the most important publications.

Purpose of the Research. State the specific purpose or research objective in one to three sentences. Write what problem is solved or which hypothesis is proved.

Materials and Methods. Describe how and why a study was done in a particular way. Include a detailed description of the research methods and of the equipment used. Mention the criteria for selecting animals and patients. Indicate the number and characteristics of patients differentiated by gender and age if required for the study. It is necessary to specify the principle of grouping of patients, as well as the type of the study. If the study was randomized describe the principle of randomization.

Mention all medical substances and chemicals used during the work. Include their international non-proprietary names, doses, ways of introduction. This section should aim to be sufficiently detailed such that other researchers with access to the data would be able to reproduce the results, to compare the results of similar studies and probably to include them in the meta-analysis.

The Materials and Methods section should include a statement about the observance of the ethical principles (both local and international: the observance of the ethical principles of the European Convention for the Protection of Vertebrate Animals; the Helsinki Declaration; informed consent of the patient). For more information, see Ethical Guidelines.

Include a subsection "Data processing" in the end of the section "Materials and Methods". Indicate which methods of statistical data processing were used. The average values should be given in the form of M ± m, where “M” is the arithmetic mean and “m” is the standard error of the mean. When indicating the statistical significance in the text of the article or in the tables it is preferable to give the total p value (p = ..., and not p <...). Correlation coefficients should be given only with indication of their statistical significance, i.e. with a p value, for example, r= 0.435; p = 0.006.

Results. Present your results in a logical sequence. Do not use references to literature sources. Present the data clearly, in the form of short descriptions with graphs, tables and figures. Do not repeat the data from the tables or figures in the text.

Include the percentages in the text of the article or table. Indicate the absolute number set equal to 100%, for example, 25% of 120 patients. Another way is to indicate both percentages and absolute numbers, for example: 25% (30/120) or 30 of 120 patients (25%).

If the percentage is consecutively recalculated, i.e. the percentage of the percentage is calculated (percentage from the number of subjects of research in the subgroup previously described in percentages), it is necessary to describe this procedure clearly and to present the number of subjects of research consecutively set equal to 100%.

The required percentage accuracy depends on the sample size. The so-called small samples (less than 20 subjects of research) usually are not described in percentages (because in such cases the percentage value is vastly greater than the absolute number of subjects of research). In this case indicate absolute values of the frequencies for this or that characteristic.

If the sample includes from 20 to 100 subjects of research the percentage is represented as an integer number.

If the sample includes more than 100 subjects of research the percentage is indicated with no more than one decimal place.

Discussion. It is useful to begin the discussion by briefly summarizing new and important findings, and explore possible mechanisms or explanations for these findings. If possible compare your findings with the data from other research. Do not repeat information mentioned in the Introduction section. The Discussion section can contain reasoned recommendations for clinical practice and possible ways of use of the findings in upcoming studies.

Conclusion. In one or two sentences summarize the work done: what results have been obtained, what they mean, what they can be used for, and what opportunities they give. Avoid claiming priority or alluding to work that has not been completed.

Illustrations. Figures should be clear, photos should be contrast. Place figure captions on a separate page indicating the numbers of the figures and explaining the meaning of all curves, letters, numbers and other symbols. Indicate the magnification range in the captions to microphotographs. Figures should be cited in the text (Fig. 1). Use a square in the left margin to indicate the place for the figure in the text of the article.  Put the number of the figure inside the square.

Each figure should be submitted in TIFF format with a resolution of at least 300 dpi. Diagrams with data should be submitted in EXCEL or WORD formats.

Digital illustrations should allow reproducing high quality images in the electronic version of the journal. If a figure has been published previously, acknowledge the original source. People in photos should not be recognizable, or the author should submit a written permission to publish these photos.

Tables. Tables capture information concisely and display it efficiently. Number tables consecutively in the order of their first citation in the text and supply a title for each. Headings in tables should correspond to the contents of the graphs. Be sure that each table is cited in the text (Table 1). Explain all nonstandard abbreviations in footnotes. Indicate statistical methods used for presentation of the variability of the data and of the significance of differences.

Tables can be included in the text. It is not necessary to send them separately.

References.

For original articles cite no more than 30 sources, for bibliographic reviews cite no more than 60 sources, for lectures and other materials cite no more than 15 sources. Apart from the basic works, bibliography should contain publications for the last 5 years.

References should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they are first mentioned in the text. Identify references in the text of the article by Arabic numerals in square brackets. Avoid references to unpublished works.

References should preferably contain articles from journals. It is not recommended to include thesis in it, as it might be difficult for the readers to find them. Do not use conference abstracts in Russian as references, since they are not included in the international databases.

Bibliographic information should be modern, authoritative and comprehensive. Refer to key original papers. Do not cite reviews where they were mentioned (as often occurs). Include papers on which your study is really based. Make sure that you have gathered all the material on your topic. You should not just rely on acknowledged experts or certain phrases. Avoid excessive self-citation.

References should be typed on a separate sheet with the use of double-spaced interval. Each source should be typed in a new line under the sequence number. Use of DOI is encouraged. You can find the DOI code (Digital Object Identifier, unique digital article identifier)  on the CrossRef website (http://www.crossref.org/). In order to receive the DOI, you need to type the title of the article in English in the search line. The vast majority of foreign journal articles and many Russian articles published after 2013 are registered in the CrossRef system and have a unique DOI.

Please pay attention to the only correct design of the doi reference: https://doi.org/10.5468/ogs.2016.59.1

Do not use the options with "doi:", "dx.doi.org", etc. In the body of the reference only the hyphen can be used. After the doi and URL (http) reference do not put a point.

References on Russian and foreign papers should be formatted in accordance with the requirements of the Vancouver style in the AMA version (AMA style, http://www.amamanualofstyle.com). The author is responsible for the accuracy of the data in the reference list. The journals’ names should be shortened in accordance with the style adopted by IndexMedicus. An accurate description of the sources mentioned in the reference list is a guarantee that the cited publication will be taken into account when assessing publishing indicators of its authors and of the institutions where the authors work.

Under the new rules considering the requirements of such international citation systems as Web of Science and Scopus, references form part of an English block of an article. Consequently, they should be given not only in the source language, but also in Latin characters.

Put the English-language part of the references after the Russian-language part in square brackets ([...]). At the end of the bibliographic description (behind the square bracket), put the DOI of the article, if there is one. At the very end of the English part of the bibliographic description, indicate the source language of the article in parenthesis.

References to foreign sources remain unchanged.

In addition to the DOI, the website https://www.citethisforme.com automatically generates a correctly formatted reference in English in AMA citation style.

Rules for the preparation of Russian references for uploading to the international citation indexes

1. Journal articles. Cite last names and initials of all authors in Latin characters and the title of the article in English as they are cited in the original publication. Next follows the name of the Russian journal in transliteration (transliteration means transfer of the Russian word in Latin characters) according to the BSI standard (automatic transliteration according to the BSI standard is made on the web page http://en.translit.net/?account=bsi). Then indicate the output data (year, volume, page). Put the publication language (InRuss.) in parenthesis. At the end of the References section put the DOI of the article if there is one, after the square brackets.

For example:

... [Belaia Z, Rozhinskaia L, Mel'nichenko G, Sitkin I, Dzeranova L, Marova E, Vaks V, Vorontsov A, Il'in A, Kolesnikova G, Dedov I. Problemy endokrinologii.2013; 59 (4): 3-10. (InRuss.).] https://doi.org/10.14341/probl20135943-10

2. All other sources are given in Latin characters using transliteration according to the BSI standard with the preservation of format. The language of the publication is indicated in parenthesis (InRuss.). For example: Gilyarevskii S.R. Miokardity: sovremennye podkhody k diagnostike I lecheniyu. M .: Media Sfera; 2008. (InRuss.).

If the source was translated into English, indicate the translated title instead of the transliterated one.

3. If there is an URL, the reference is formatted as follows:

Ethical issues

Authorship. All persons designated as "authors" must meet the criteria of this concept. The participation of each author in the work must be sufficient to claim responsibility for its content. The right to be called the author is based on the following facts:

1) significant contribution to the concept and design of the study or to data analysis and interpretation;

2) preparation of the text of the article or the introduction of fundamental changes;

3) final approval of the version submitted for publishing.

Participation, consisting only in financing or selecting material, does not justify inclusion in the group of authors. The overall management of the research team is also not recognized as sufficient for authorship.

Editors have the right to ask authors what contribution each of them made. This information can be published.

All members of the team that do not meet the criteria of authorship, but who assisted in the research on gathering, analysis and interpretation of data, provision of materials and tools, should be listed with their consent in the Acknowledgments section.

The order in which the authors will be listed is determined by their joint decision.

Copyright. By sending a manuscript to the magazine, authors confirm that the material presented is original and has not previously been published. Authors transfer the copyright for the article to the journal. All changes made in the manuscript by the editorial team are coordinated with the authors. Intellectual property rights are reserved for authors. By transferring copyright for the article to the journal, authors agree with the open access publication of their article on the journal's website, as well as in the databases and other sources of information in which the journal is presented.

Authors can use published materials again only upon agreement with the editorial team. Authors can reuse figures, tables and text of up to 250 words with a mandatory reference to the journal without informing the editorial team.

Conflict of interest. Conflict of interest concerning a particular manuscript arises if one of the participants of the review or publication process (author, reviewer or editor) has obligations that could influence his opinion (even if it is not the case in reality). Examples of potential conflicts of interest include financial relations (employment, consultancies, stock ownership, honoraria and paid expert testimony), direct or through close relatives. There are other possible reasons, such as personal relationships, scientific rivalry and intellectual preferences.

Participants of the review and publication process must disclose any conflict of interest.

Authors should indicate the names of those who, in their opinion, should not review their manuscript due to a possible, most often professional, conflict of interest. If authors are not sure if the conflict of interest exists, they should explain the situation to the editor, so that he could make a decision.

Reviewers should notify the editorial team of any conflicts of interest that may affect their opinion about the manuscript. They should refuse to review an article if they consider it justified. Therefore, the editorial team should be able to assess the objectivity of the review and decide whether it is worth to decline the services of this particular reviewer.

The Editorial Board can use the information provided in conflict of interest or financial interest statements as a basis for making decisions.

Editors should not have personal, professional or financial interest in any matter in which they can make decisions. Other members of the editorial team should provide editors with a description of their financial interest (since it may have an influence on editorial decisions) and refuse to make a decision if there is a conflict of interest.

Compliance with patients' rights and privacy. Patients have a right to privacy, which must not be disclosed without their consent. Therefore identifying information, including patients’ names, initials, hospital numbers and clinical records, should not be included in written descriptions, photographs and pedigrees unless the information is essential for scientific purposes and you have obtained written informed consent for publication in print and electronic form from the patient (or parent or guardian). Authors must inform patients about the possibility that the identifying material can be accessible via the Internet after publication. Authors should ensure that they have received written informed consent from patients. A statement to this effect should be included in the manuscript.

Protection of human and animal rights. If the article contains descriptions of experiments involving humans, authors should ensure that the work described has been carried out in accordance with the Code of Ethics of the committee (which makes part of an institution or is national) responsible for the experiments involving humans  and Helsinki Declaration from 1975 and its revised version from 2000. In describing animal experiments authors should indicate whether the requirements of the European Convention for the Protection of Vertebrates, of the national government and of their institution’s board for the maintenance and use of laboratory animals have been observed.

Publication of negative results. Many studies showing negative results are in fact indecisive/ inconclusive. The possibility of publishing incomplete research results is considered by the editorial board in accordance with a special procedure, as often such articles do not have biomedical value and use the journal’s resources.

Multiple publications. The editorial team does not consider manuscripts simultaneously submitted for publication to other journals, as well as papers the greater part of which has already been published, or papers that have become part of other work submitted or accepted for publication by some other print or electronic media. This policy does not exclude consideration of an article not accepted for publication by another journal, or of a complete description presented after the publication of preliminary results, i.e. abstracts or posters presented at professional conferences.

Correspondence. If necessary readers can send their comments, questions or critical remarks in respect to the articles published in the journal. Authors can respond to comments if they wish.

All incoming scientific articles are subject to review.

Within 5-10 days, the technical secretary verifies if the manuscript corresponds to the requirements of the journal. The compliance of the article to the profile of the journal is also assessed. References are checked selectively (from 30 to 50%). The manuscript is checked in the "Anti-plagiarism" system. If the manuscript is incorrectly documented or other errors are found, the materials will be returned to the author for proper formatting and elimination of defects.

If there are no defects in the manuscript submitted, the article is sent for peer review to two independent experts (bilateral blind peer review) within the next 3-5 days. The reviewer can be a member of the editorial board of the journal, or a specialist in a particular field of medicine.

Reviewers should announce their decision within 15-20 days.

The review can be sent to the author of the article upon his request, as well as to the HAC upon their request without signature, name, position and place of work of the reviewer.

If the reviewer recommends authors to correct or complete the article, the review is sent to the author by e-mail. Corrections / additions must be made within 2-6 weeks from the date of receipt of the review. After the second review, the article can be considered by the editorial board (if the second review is positive) or again sent to the authors for revision. There can be no more than three iterations like this.

After the third negative review, the article is excluded from further consideration, and a motivated refusal is sent to the author. If necessary (and / or at the author's insistence) the manuscript can be reviewed by other experts.

Original reviews are stored in the editorial office for one year.

After receiving the conclusion from the reviewers (positive feedback), the editorial board makes a final decision about the article. In some cases (but only if the review is positive) it is possible to publish the article by the decision of the editor-in-chief. After deciding to publish an article the managing editor informs the author about it, indicating the approximate terms of publication. The timing of publication depends on the fullness of the editorial portfolio.

The editors reserve the right to shorten and edit the articles.

* * *

Articles which do not comply with these requirements will not be considered. Declined manuscripts are not returned to the authors.

The detailed version of the "Uniform requirements for manuscripts submitted to biomedical journals" developed by the International Committee of Editors of Medical Journals, in particular ethical issues, is available on our website (translated in 2006). The original version (in English, 2010) is available at www.ICMJE.org.

Author’s copies are provided in electronic form upon request. Printed author's copies in the journal are not provided. If authors wish to receive a printed version of a published article, they must subscribe to the printed version of the journal.

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The manuscripts are accepted if has not been published or submitted for publication elsewhere.

  2. The materials should be prepared in a format OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, RTF, or World Perfect.

  3. Internet links are provided as a complete URL.

  4. Text should be typed with an interval of one line spacing, font Times New Roman, 12 pt; to highlight the accents it is recommended to use italics rather than underlining (except Internet links). All images, graphics and tables are placed within the text according to the meaning of the particular part of text  (and not at the end of the document).

  5. Text should follow the stylistic and bibliography requirements as stated in  Regulations  located in the Part "About Us."

  6. Please, remove the authors' names from the title of the article and other parts of the document to ensure the  anonymity of reviewing.
